About the Library

The Library and Its Holdings

The main focus (and most of the acquisitions) of the library is on legal informatics and bioethics, but you can also find materials on IT law and on the philosophy, sociology, and history of law. The library's collections are housed on three floors and contain over 12,000 items.

This is a small library, but you can consult books, periodicals, reference materials, electronic resources, and online catalogues, as well as the Progetto Irnerio collection, making available on the Web the digital reproductions of the Medieval manuscripts held at the Collegio di Spagna in Bologna.

As of 2015 the library forms part of the main law library of the Bologna University Department of Law: Antonio Cicu Law Library.

The library is staffed by a single librarian.

The hours of operation are subject to change: please contact the library for updated information, either by phone (+39 051 277 220) or email or by visiting the following webpages: "Orari di apertura e dei servizi" (in Italian - but news are also in English) or "Bacheca" (notices about changes, in both Italian and English).

Anyone may gain access to the library and its resources, but students and faculty of the Bologna University School of Law are given priority. The small reading room is reserved for reading books and periodicals of the library.

Please be mindful of others in the reading room.

All library holdings can be found by searching the National Bibliographic System (SBN), a catalogue listing the holdings of a large number of Italian libraries. There are no card catalogues.

Lending System

The library's lending system is computerised. Anybody who is registered in the local database may borrow books or ask to be registered by showing an ID card. Special collections and rare books, dissertations, periodicals, and books published before 1900 are not for loan.

Other Services Offered by the Library

Information and Bibliographical Research

The librarian is available to guide you through the library's services and will help you to consult the online catalogues. You can also consult all of the library's electronic resources by using the computers in the reading room.

Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery

If an item you are looking for is not available in the library, it may be requested from other libraries worldwide through interlibrary loan. We do not charge fees for the service, but lending libraries may.
Lending out to other participating libraries is also free of charge.
Special collections and rare books, dissertations, periodicals, and books published before 1900 are neither for regular loan nor for interlibrary loan.

Suggestions for Purchasing Books or Periodicals

You can ask the librarian for new acquisitions, so long as the subject matter is pertinent to the disciplines the library is specialized in.

A copy machine is available within the library: you can use it by purchasing a card, the same kind used in most Bologna University libraries. Copyright law applies.

Online Services

You can send in a request for a book from any computer at any time by using the electronic catalogue.
